Third Reflection on ICT Integration Lesson.

The importance of integration of ICT in teaching and learning was recommended many years ago. Students in schools were made to learn ICT. Children took ICT as one of the subjects.  Teacher trainees were trained in the integration of ICT in the lesson. Training was given for all the teachers those who completed their training long time ago before integration of ICT was taught. But the integration of ICT was not successful due to many factors. Some of them might be due to teachers not willing to change/ teachers teaching children in traditional way without the usage of ICT. And in most of the schools there was the lack of resources like electricity, computers etc.

This year in 2020, due to the pandemic all the teachers and almost all the students were forced to use ICT, which is a good start indeed. Now all the people became aware of the importance of ICT. Teachers started taking online classes using Wechat, Telegram, messenger, Google classroom etc. I teach my children using Wechat and telegram. Many of the parents are comfortable using Wechat so, I teach through Wechat and few of them through telegram. Although telegram is much better as we can send large files.

But the saddest thing is 100% children are not in the Wechat group. Few of them don’t possess smart phone and some children stay in a place where there is no network. To help those children teachers visit children twice in a month to distribute SIM books, readers and worksheets, to guide and assess children’s work. To those who are in Wechat group, telling time in quarter past / quarter to, a mathematics lesson was taught to class II children. Few examples of clock with time written below was shared to the children. Audio message in English as well as in Dzongkha was sent to make children understand. Video was downloaded from YouTube and was shared to the children for better understanding of the lesson.

I am happy that the children participated actively, they did the activities well. All the students in the Wechat have done their work and they send in Wechat for correction. I did the necessary correction and gave comments as well. While going for door to door assessment, I took time worksheet and when the children were asked, “what time is it?” They said the time correctly in quarter past and quarter to which shows that the children understood my lesson very well. Although there was no classroom teaching, teaching learning was possible due to the usage of ICT so I would like to continue teaching my children with the integration of ICT.

                                                                     Reflection

Integration of ICT in teaching and learning became very crucial as the 21st century children love to learn through the usage of technologies. Students enjoy and take active participation whereby learning take place. However most of the teachers taught in the traditional way with the usage of chalk and chalkboard, in lecture method but with the close down of schools the usage of ICT became like mandate as online teaching is not possible without using ICT.

Although Primary schools are still closed but the online teaching has to be done without fail. As per the government directives we chat for lower classes (PP-III) and Google classroom for classes IV and above were created. However children complain about not being able to open Google classroom with poor net connection so teachers have to send in we chat, telegram and messenger. Some students and their parents don’t have mobile, in such cases teachers’ pair up the student with the one having mobile.

I taught mathematics to class III students on the topic fraction. Notes and examples were given, videos were downloaded from you tube and was shared with the children in we chat and through telegram to those who are not having we chat. Few activities were given to the children to solve on their own. Almost all of them has done their work correctly and I am sure they understood very well. Few students around 2-3 made mistake, for those students I made correction.

While going for door to door evaluation, I asked students about my lesson, they said they enjoyed watching the videos and understood the lesson. So it was clear that they like teaching through such media. But at the same time some were complaining for not being able to open the videos due to poor net. Anyway I am happy that most of the students have learnt something. Teaching and learning was possible due to such technologies otherwise I can’t imagine how teaching and learning could have taken place with the closure of schools due to the pandemic.

ICT integration in teaching

REFLECTION

With the outbreak of covid-19, schools all over the country closed down and the teaching was to be done online through we chat for the lower classes PP- III and through Google classroom to the higher classes IV- VI.  Usage of ICT is crucial in teaching and it became more crucial while teaching online to the students for the better understanding of the concept and to make the lesson meaningful and enjoyable.

In one of my online teachings, I taught Mathematics to class II students on the topic Perimeter. It was taught through we chat.  Greeting and explanations was made through audio message. Three examples were given on how to find the perimeter. For better understanding a video was downloaded from you tube and it was shared to the students. To check the understanding, a short activity was given to the children. Later correction was made and comments were given as well.

While going through children’s activity 80% of the students did well which shows that many of the students understood very well. Whereas 20% of the students made mistake, it might be because they were unable to understand as the students were learning from online teaching for the first time. Students are used to learning face to face in the class with lots of hands on practical. Some of the students stay where net is poor and they complained of not being able to open the video sent to them.

However with the usage of ICT teaching learning was possible. Without such technologies it would not have been possible to teach children in a situation like this year. As suggested parents play a vital role in educating their kids, they browse net to get information required for their children. Besides that they look for videos related to the topics given by the teacher and let them watch. Technologies made teaching and learning more effective.
